Demographics: Apprentice

Description

Apprentices were young people, usually males, but also females, who were contracted to an adult employer who had to pay them, clothe them, feed them, lodge them, teach them a trade, and let them go at the end of the contract.   By that time they would be ready to begin working in that trade.

The status of an apprentice was not the same as an enslaved person, but also not the same as a fully free citizen of the settlement.

There are many contracts extant in the records. https://encyclopedia.nahc-mapping.org/document/meetingadministrative-me…
