The Cruydt-Boeck by Rembert Dodoens was the most important herbal in the Dutch language used throughout the late 16th through early 18th-century as the go-to medicinal manual, both in the Netherlands and New Netherlands.
The most translated book of its day apart from the Bible, Hans and Sara Kierstede will have owned a copy to consult herbal treatments in their home and apothecary in New Amsterdam. Translated into French by Carolus Clusius as Histoire des Plantes, into English by Henry Lyte as A New Herbal, or Historie of Plants, and in Dutch as Crvydt-Boeck van Robertus Dodonaeus, volgens sijne laatste verbetering.... the Dutch Leiden edition for the first time included additional information on American plants, prepared by Joost van Ravelingen, the brother of the publisher and a botanist-physician like Dodoens himself.
