North Friesland's island of Nordstrand or "Noorstrandt" was flooded in 1634 and several families left for a fresh start in New Amsterdam. They settled in New Netherland and several are listed in the Hudson Valley, New Amsterdam, and the area around Fort Orange. There is a Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn named after Gerret Noorstrandt whose family was one of the first families that settled in New Utrecht, Brooklyn.
