Farms were very important to the success of New Amsterdam and New Netherland. Because of the distance from Europe, the settlement depended upon crops and farm animals raised as close as possible to where people were living.
Native Americans played a significant role in teaching the settlers how to raise crops, in particular the 3 sisters - corn/maize, beans, squash.
