Description
Jacob Steendam was listed as the First Poet of New Amsterdam by Stokes. His poetry about the colony was published in 1654 in the Netherlands. It was intended to help spark interest there in New Amsterdam and New Netherland, and it is likely that it did, for immigration to the New World from the Netherlands increased significantly in the years between 1654 and 1660.
