Description
A midwife’s job was to assist at births. Midwives were present in New Netherland from the beginning. The midwife in New Amsterdam was an employee of the Dutch West India Company. Often, female friends, relations, and neighbors of the mother and father were present at births and assisted the midwife, if necessary.
