Description
Some people have translated Adelborst to mean cadet, which is a modern meaning. In the seventeenth century, Adelborst was a rank slightly above common soldier, often given to non-Dutch men of good birth, who could not hold officer rank in the Company as being not nationals, in recognition of their social status. They received a higher pay than soliders.
As to cadets, there were actually foreign officers in the WIC army.
