17th Century Documents use language that may seem offensive to some of our readers. We have not omitted these terms from displayed translations, and often used the same terms along with more appropriate terms in order to ensure for maximum search results. For example we have used 'Slave - Enslaved Person' and "Indigenous People listed in the documents as 'Indians'" to ensure that researchers using a variety of search terms will receive similar results.
The New Amsterdam History Center, the Mapping Early New York Project and all participants in this website hope to provide a useful research tool, and expect that the readers and users will use their own discretion in sharing language with those who might have sensitivity to words that are no longer in common usage.
