Appeared before us, Messrs. Jan Willems and Joos de la Grasie, councillors of this colony of New Amstel, the honorable Hendrick Cip, about 29 years old; and Jacob de Commer, surgeon of this colony, about 27 years old; who, at the request of Mr. Beeckman, vice-director on the South River, have attested, testified and declared to be true and truthful that they, the deponents, were at Fop Jansz' house on the morning of 20 June where he, Harmen Hendriksz, lay wounded. Many people were there grieving over the patient, when the schout, van Sweringe came in. While Dr. Jacobs was bandaging the patient, he, van Sweringhe, said that it troubled him that he had shot an innocent person, and that the wrong man had to pay the price. With this he concluded his remarks. All of the aforesaid the deponents declare to be true and truthful, and are ready to confirm it by oath at any time. Thus done in the colony of New Amstel, 2 August 1662.
