Description
Many Dutch homes included a cupboard bed or several. In some cases the doors were decorated with hand painted motifs. The doors allowed for privacy and kept the sleepers warm. Today we might find the dimensions a bit short in comparison to modern beds because the sleepers were almost sitting up, reclined but not fully flat in the bed.
Cupboard beds sometimes had storage underneath, or were tucked into the space behind or below a stairway, so they were very space efficient.
