Document Type: Manumission

Manumission documents proved that a slave had been either fully released or partially released from slavery.  Manumission takes place when masters free their slaves as a result of the exchange of funds or goods, in recognition of years of service, or simply voluntarily.    In contrast, Emancipation is the process of freeing slaves through government action.

Manumission documents often included a clause that required former slaves to pay a sum annually in order to maintain their freedom.
