Spinning wheels were essential tools for creating yarn used to weave fabric for clothing and other household goods, both in the Netherlands and oversees in New Amsterdam. This intimate domestic scene offers a glimpse of a humble interior with an elderly couple during their evening hours. The man is resting in his chair staring ahead in pensive thought, while his wife is working at her spinning wheel.
