Artist: Dirck Hals, Dutch (Haarlem 1591 - 1656 Haarlem)

This intimate domestic scene of two kids playing with a cat could be taken straight from any of the bustling households in New Amsterdam, where many young children ran around at any given moment of the day. Cats were commonly kept as pets and also found useful to keep the mice away.
