Amsterdam has often been described as "A forest of masts", and this water entertainment helps to give context to that statement.    A city that used entire fleets of ships to entertain Peter the Great on his trip from Moscow was indeed wealthy, and technologically advanced.    Czar Peter the Great stayed in the Netherlands for some time and conducted a serious study of the innovations in shipbuilding that made the Dutch merchant and warships so famous.
