Departing from Amsterdam late in 1612, this small ship must have travelled across in the depth of winter to arrive at the Hudson River and Manhattan Island in the spring of 1613. Because the harbor at Manhattan Island never freezes, they would have arrived to find Indigenous people there trading goods, winter whaling products, venison, and wampum.
Famously, Juan Rodriguez from Santo Domingo abandoned the ship, and decided to stay on the island. He married a Native American woman, and set up the first independent trading post.
