Ship: The Bear (de Beer) - Vergulde Beer

Description

In December of 1656, The Vergulde Beer (The Bear or Golden Bear) sailed from Amsterdam, and later Texel to depart for New Amsterdam on December 25, 1656.

It was part of a fleet headed by the Prins Mauritz (Prince Maurice) that was to supply settlers, soldiers and materials to establish Fort Kasimir (Casimir) on the Delaware River.

This ship sailed with the de Bever (Vergulde Bever or Golden Beaver), and the Gelderse Blom.

Three days after departure on 12-28-1656, a storm separated the Prince Maurice from the rest of the fleet.
