Lot Event Type: Sale

Description

Property could be bought and sold in New Amsterdam and New Netherland, and there were often detailed records of these transactions.   Both men and women were permitted by the court to enter into contracts to sell or purchase property.

The definition of 'property' included land, houses, farms, cattle, ships, cargo from ships, and also enslaved human beings.

Former enslaved persons also had the right to purchase and sell property, and there are records of them doing just that.
