Keeping people fed during the Dutch Colonial Period was a big challenge for the European settlers, but probably less so for the Native Americans.     Although the New World was abundant with game and fish, and the Native Americans had developed extremely productive agriculture using the 3 Sisters method, for the Europeans everything else had to be grown, and the soils could be very challenging to till, with many rocks.   For the enslaved people, many of whom were accustomed to climates and soils of Africa and the Middle East, growing conditions, food types, and cooking methods all had to be learned and endured.
