From the following entry, it seems that Emanuel Pietersen, who later married Paulo's widow, was living on this land as early as March 31, 1644; probably he had been in possession for some time. His plantation was to be the terminus of the palisades along "the old highway" from the Bouwery Road across the end of the swamp.
