The Dam seen in western direction. On the left the house on the Kalverstraat, next to it the entrance Gasthuissteeg, then the Old Town Hall with behind it on the Gasthuissteeg and on the right the Sint Elisabeth-Gasthuis. Dating of the representation: 1641. Technique: etching.

This is the Stadt Huys as it would have appeared to many of the immigrants to New Netherland who left before the fire in 1652.   The square in front of the building was often crowded, and they were accustomed to an urban landscape.
