Director of Bouweries for Kiliaen van Rensselaer in 1630, he managed farms in New Netherland, both at Rensselaerswyck and Fort Orange until 1632.   He was granted a land patent on Long Island, which became the plantation "Achervelt"; later it served as the founding of the town of New Amersfoort, named after Gerritse's original home.[3] Today the area is known as Flatlands.   Neeltje Janse Jacobdochter, his wife helped him to settle on Long Island at a farm he named New Amserfoort.
